About A-LAW
The UK Centre for Animal Law (A-LAW) is a largely volunteer-led charity working towards a world in which animals’ interests are fully protected by the law. Established in December 2004 as the Association of Lawyers for Animal Welfare, and later becoming the UK Centre for Animal Law, it was the first UK charity dedicated to ensuring that the law works effectively for animals.
Since then, A-LAW has played a significant role in developing animal law as a recognised legal specialism in the UK, while supporting the growth of a community of lawyers, academics, students and NGOs who practise, study or utilise this important field.

- Our mission is to promote knowledge and education about the law relating to animal protection, to achieve a better legal framework for animals, and to see existing laws being applied properly.

Our work for animals
What we’re doing to realise our vision of a world where animals’ interests are protected by law:
- Legal advocacy – We identify and highlight areas where animal law can be strengthened and use our expertise to respond to consultations and policy developments.
- Animal law education – We publish The UK Journal of Animal Law and host animal law training seminars and events, including the annual UK Animal Law Conference.
- Student outreach – We provide opportunities for law students, helping to inspire and support the next generation of animal lawyers.
- Strategic support – We provide strategic support to animal NGOs, helping them identify legal solutions to advance their campaign objectives. This includes coordinating the UK Animal Protection Alliance.
- Working together – We facilitate and participate in collaborative initiatives with animal protection organisations and others to advance animals’ interests.
- Spreading the word – We share news, updates and analysis on the latest developments in animal law and policy.
